Longing

I was missing my father and my kids and grand-kids today and yearning for the birth of the one who will be born in December. I was mourning the Supreme court confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett and all the undoing of the rights and the protections of the people that it portends. I was fretting over the rising number of Covid 19 cases and what I’d read last night in Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste about how the Nazis modeled their race laws after America’s but found the one

rule too extreme. I was worrying about the fact that today is the last day for failing students to withdraw from classes without penalty. So I wrote this:

Get along

Get along

Move along

The heart is

A brain

The brain is in the heart

And we are made

Of longing

Of yearning

And longing is so long

So long!

So far

So close

To breathing

and dressed

In the costumes

Of the dying

Of moving along

Moving it along

Getting on

Going along long way
